Prep time: 45 mins – Cook time: 30 mins – Assembly time: 20-30 mins

Ingredients:

Chocolate Cake

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar (less if you don’t like it very sweet)
  • 1 ½ cups cocoa
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups buttermilk (substitute is 1 cup milk with 2 tablespoons vinegar; mix them and let sit for 5 minutes)
  • 1 ½ cups hot water
  • ½ cup oil

Chocolate Pudding

  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup cocoa
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Oreo Whipped Cream

  • 1 cup cream cheese
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2/3 cup crushed Oreos

Equipment:

Measuring cups and spoons
Electric handheld whisk
3 large bowls (or 2 if you don’t mind washing one in-between)
Two 9 inch / 23 cm square pans or three 8 inch / 20 cm round pans, lined with parchment paper or buttered and floured
Medium saucepan
Medium bowl

How to…..

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit/176 degrees Celsius

Cake

Mix all the dry ingredients. Then add all the wet ingredients and mix with a handheld whisk. Pour into the pans and bake for 30 mins. Let the cakes cool completely.

Pudding

Mix the sugar, cocoa, cornflour and salt in a saucepan and stir over medium heat. Gradually add the milk. Bring to a boil over medium heat while stirring occasionally. Let it boil and continue stirring for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla. Chill until you’re ready to use.

Oreo Whipped Cream

Using a handheld whisk, mix the cream cheese on medium low speed until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and keep mixing on low. Raise the speed to medium-high and mix a little. Add in the vanilla and the cold heavy cream gradually. Mix on medium high speed. When you add all the heavy cream, add in the 2/3 cup crushed Oreos.

Watch it carefully, as soon as the cream turns thick stop mixing. It takes about 30 seconds – 1 minute of mixing.

Now assemble the trifle in a big dish or several small ones.

Cut the cake in cubes and place them in the bottom of the dish. Cover the bottom of the dish fully with the cake. Add an even layer of chocolate pudding over the cake. Then add cookie crumbs. Finally add the heavy cream and top with cookie crumbs.

Ps – you will probably not use all the cake – make cake pops with the leftovers!.
